R & D Funding of Medical Device Development
Medical device developments can cover the spectrum from incremental improvements to radical new medical inventions that transform wide areas of medicine. The interplay of private development and primarily publicly-funded health care often presents unique challenges to the existence of incentives for private industry to undertake new medical device developments. For these and other reasons, a wide variety of funding programs exist for the medical field, including medical device development.

However, SR&ED funding is neutral to technological advances in the area of medical device developments (versus other industries) and only the usual caution must be exercised to carefully document the technological advance/uncertainty of incremental improvements.

Typically, other medical research grant sources (in addition to SR&ED) are necessary to develop new medical inventions because of the large monetary investment / risk, lengthy timelines, and extensive certification / regulatory requirements prior to general use, but the SR&ED program can greatly assist in rewarding the core risk-takers without a corresponding relinquishment of IP. The IRAP program may also be available if the technological advance is sufficiently fundamental. TSGI can assist with either program.
