Medical Research Funding

A broad range of forward-looking medical research grants may be available to your company’s medical research projects, or to you as an individual, depending on the specifics of your project.

The SR&ED program provides medical research funding based on financial resources that have already been expended, so if this is your situation it is quite possible that the program is already applicable to you (or of course may be in the future). Medical research by its nature is likely to fall into the “scientific research” end of the spectrum of SR&ED (versus experimental development), which generally can be easily shown to meet the SR&ED criteria of scientific (versus technological) advancement/uncertainty, and again by its nature intrinsically requires careful documentation of all stages of the current medical research. Complications can arise, however, if other medical research grants are involved and/or the ownership of the Intellectual Property is dispersed among more than one entity that may be funding the medical research. TSGI can assist with this potentially complex area.

Medical Research Studies Outside of Corporations
Projects that are executed outside of a corporate entity (eg by individuals) are theoretically included within program eligibility, but on a practical basis SR&ED funding can be impaired by this situation. Therefore if you are still in the planning stages, TSGI can advise you on improving the structure within which the medical research studies will be executed. Also, sometimes researchers believe they can further the progress of the medical research projects by paying themselves minimal salaries. TSGI has repeatedly shown researchers that this is a flawed approach; we can show you too.
