R&D Fields Eligible for R&D Tax Credits (SR&ED)
and IRAP Funding
For IRAP funding, there is no definitive list of eligible fields of science and / or technology.
For SR&ED funding, with the introduction of the new SR&ED tax credit claim forms (T661) required for taxation years ending in 2009 or later, the
claimant must indicate the closest-fit field from a provided list of eligible fields of science and / or technology. The major areas, and the associated number of specific fields within each area, are:
Natural and formal sciences: 46
Engineering and technology: 45
Medical and Health sciences: 33
Agricultural sciences: 16
While the spectrum of fields to choose from appears to be wide, there are numerous aspects to consider in judging the field that fits your project most closely.
TSGI has extensive experience in evaluating such issues in the context of these R&D programs.
Note that the social sciences and humanities are definitely excluded. Even so, if work conducted in those areas is in support of
a core advance in a field of science and / or technology, this core could qualify the project and the related effort for R&D tax credits.
